NEW YORK FASHION WEEK IN FULL BLOOM THE GREAT FASHION ESCAPE

With the tragedy of Hurricane Irma, the disaster in Mexico and mass forest fires in California, New York Fashion Week proves a welcome diversion with over 200 designers showing their new fashion for Spring/Summer 2018. New York’s multiple venues is a huge challenge for invitees to navigate their way through massive traffic, plus many shows overlap each other and the competition is fierce among designers with three or four shows going on at the same time. Crazy….indeed, but, this is New York, the fashion capital of the world and the competitive nature is real. At least, the weather in NYC is great and a cheerful, fresh “fashion spirit” is a much needed welcome treat.

Modern, Feminine, Refined and Bold were some of the words that described the Tracy Reese Spring 2018 presentation, shown against a stark white backdrop at Chelsea Piers, Studio D. A cast of multidimensional models of all shapes and sizes stood reciting positive affirmations, as it relates to the theme of the collection – `The Celebration of the Feminine Spirit.’ Bold colors and modern silhouettes were spiced with feminine details, proving there is power in prettiness. New volumes on trousers included high waisted effects. Contemporary art and hand drawings, prints were flattened for a fresh take on some easy breezy dresses. Tracy’s program notes heralded the fact that the collection’s strong point of view, invites each woman to make it her own.

ROMEO HUNTE
Young Brooklyn designer Romeo Hunte showed his new line on the Intrepid War Ship Museum, docked on Manhattan’s Hudson River. Hunte came into notoriety when celebrity stylist Law Roache started dressing young Hollywood starlet Zendaya in his bold, original creations. Soon afterward, Romeo created a custom made, asymmetric, striped shirt-dress for superstar Beyonce’ and, as they say, “the rest is history.” His beautifully draped and wrapped blouses and jackets were shown with no pants or skirts. `Bottomless fashion looks’ I dare say – the designer said he wanted to put the emphasis on these wonderfully crafted tops. But the bare bottoms were so distracting, with “everything” showing under a barely-there thong or a sheer pair of mesh stockings took away from the creativity of his sharp asymmetric jackets, billowing coats, and crisp cotton blouses.

With years of experience under his belt, as the creative force behind the Douglas Hannant fashion line, Frederick Anderson launched his premier collection titled: `African American,’ shown in an elegant townhouse off Fifth Avenue. The designer blended sportswear, daywear and athletic wear together, to make up a stylish wardrobe, ideal for the stylish, modern-day woman. The designer said that the collection has the touch of a throwback with the earthy sexiness of the 70s, juxtaposed with his African travel influences. -“The color red is a mainstay through embracing the spirit of the vitality, wealth, and aggression of the continent.” There were several standout pieces in this presentation. Guests were gushing over the white Ponti dress with lace details and cutouts, the multi engineered lace dress with feather trim and a multi silk chiffon pleated halter top over Pleated Palazzo pants.

The sheer luxury of The French Riviera was the inspiration for designer Son Jung Wan’s runway show at the Clarkson Skylight Studio downtown Manhattan. Vivid colors in a wild floral palette were the main story of this lavish collection. The mash-up featured; Fuchsia silk tops and flowing skirts. Keen embellishments included sequined pants, lambskin collar detail, and metal bead detail. Her color story was centered around Bronze, metallic green, Blue florals, White, Rose, and Pink all in fluttering loose skirts and elegant tops, rompers and detailed trousers. Son Jung also integrated her brazen menswear in her collection.
