Business Attire – How to make it work for you

The transition from college life to a career comes with many challenges, not the least of which is figuring out what to wear. Many times, business students are required to wear suits to classes, but gone are the days of suits being daily wear in the professional work environment.

When the time comes to get dressed for your first day of work, you want to make a statement and a good first impression, but the last thing you want to do is come on too strong or too casual.

The question remains: What do the four main office dress codes actually look like?

Business Formal

Many times, this will be referred to as “boardroom attire.” Business Formal is, as you may have imagined, the most formal of the workplace dress codes and as such, is often saved for special occasions. Business Formal is all about remaining conservative and clean cut in your attire. It would be well worth your while to visit your local tailor and talk about the cost difference between a custom made suit and having an off the rack suit tailored for you.

Here are the basics:

For Women:

  • Tailored pantsuit or skirt
  • Single, conservative color
  • Closed toe heels

For Men:

  • Tailored and pressed suit
  • Single, conservative color
  • Conservative tie, typically one color
  • Black or brown dress shoes

Business Professional

The difference between Business Formal and Business Professional is minimal, but the focus is on Business Professional being a daily dress code. Business Professional is made to be an everyday option for the higher-level businessperson. When wearing Business Professional, feel free to add some accents to your outfit such as a classic watch or pendant.

Here are the basics:

For Women:

  • Pantsuit or skirt, top and blazer
  • Conservative colors or limited patterns
  • Button down shirt or blouse
  • Closed toed shoes; heels or dressy flats

Business Casual

Business Casual allows each worker a chance to display his or her own individual style. With the sport jackets and blazers stripped away and button down shirts and the occasional tie remaining, Business Casual creates a more comfortable and laid back work environment.

When it comes to finding the right clothes for business casual, look into brands like Betabrand who have full collections of work clothes. They even have pants for women that are designed for both comfort and style. And men should be looking to find the right pair of chinos or dress pants to anchor their outfits.

Here are the basics:

For Women:

  • Shirts and blouses, not necessarily button downs
  • Explore colors and patterns
  • Skirt or dress pants
  • Comfortable flats or loafers

For Men:

  • Collared shirts, button downs, polos
  • Sweaters, cardigans, casual blazers
  • Chinos, relaxed dress pants
  • Closed toed shoes

Casual

The Casual dress code has been growing in popularity, especially in the Silicon Valley and technology industries. The Casual dress code gives the businessperson an opportunity to bring personality to work. In a casual work environment, there’s a temptation to take it too far and walk into the office in a T-shirt and beat up sneakers. With a casual dress code, the goal is to stay comfortable and classy while showing who you are. A great way to show some personality is in shoe choice, so don’t be afraid to wear your favorite boat shoes or a fun pair of boots.

Here are the basics:

For Women:

  • Well cut tops and blouses
  • Most colors and patterns
  • Jeans should be dark and fitted
  • Boots, sandals, and sneakers are acceptable

For Men:

  • Fitted shirts, button downs and polos
  • Crew or V neck sweaters and cardigans
  • Dark jeans or well cut trousers or chinos
  • Classy sneakers, boots or boat shoes.

There are a lot of changes you’ll have to get used to during your transition from college life to the professional world. On your first day of work you want your outfit to be the last of your concerns. Let your outfit build towards a good first impression, and your hard work sustain it.
