Beauty and Makeup Tips, Q & A with Makeup Artist, Alex Jones
Just in time for the holidays, celebrity makeup artist Alex Jones answers questions on looking your best and adding extra sparkle to your celebratory look. We learned of Alex during our coverage of British cyber start-up retailer, Undercover Glamour.
Q: Which foundation has the best coverage with a matte finish for everyday use?
Nina Hearne, Model from Herts
Alex: My favourite matte foundation has to be Nars Sheer Matte it’s a little pricey but worth the investment for an absolutely flawless finish and builds beautifully for extra coverage. If you’re happy with your usual foundation and shine is more of a problem, Smashbox have a great Photo Matte Anti-Shine that can be applied over/under your regular makeup to keep you shine-free, perfect for Xmas partying!
Q: Is there a fake tan around that actually looks realistic?
Angela Keen, fitness & swim instructor
Alex: I’ve tried all kinds of fake tan over the years and I find they really vary depending on your skin tone. If, like myself, you are quite fair I would recommend using a gradual tan for a more natural look. My personal favourites are St. Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan light/medium and Garnier Summer Body.
If you are looking for a full-on tan that still looks natural, I would recommend both St. Tropez Bronzing Mouse or Xen-tan lotion but be sure to properly exfoliate and moisturise at least a few hours before applying to avoid patchiness!
Q: To Botox or not to Botox? When should I start? Can I achieve younger looking skin without it? Catherine Peck, director of Undercover Glamour.
Alex: Hmmm that’s a difficult one as I’ve never had Botox myself and I personally quite like the odd laughter line! I do however want my skin to appear as young and radiant as it possibly can which I believe is possible without Botox. With Xmas around the corner there are lots of indulgent, anti-aging facial treatments you could ask Santa to book you in for! The Hyperbaric Oxygen Facial is a big favourite among celebrities for its ability to turn back the clock!
If a trip to your local spa is a little extravagant, my personal skin essentials for a youthful glow include Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant and Antioxidant Hydramist and at least once a week I will apply my Liz Earle Brightening Treatment Mask. Also, using illuminating face creams and brighteners as part of your daily makeup routine can make you look years younger in seconds! Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener and Mac Strobe Cream are on my list of beauty must haves!
Q; I’m looking for a mineral foundation, what would you recommend and would I have to put powder over the top? Kate Coleman, Product Developer/ Garment Technologist at Musto
Alex: I recently wrote a review for Glo-Minerals and discovered their Protective Liquid Foundation which I really liked. If you’re looking for an option that is quick and easy, BareMinerals Matte SPF 15 Foundation provides medium coverage with no need for a finishing powder.
Q: What is your favourite eyeliner? Sarah Hamilton, Makeup Artist
Alex: I have 3 favourite eyeliners in my kit at the moment! Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Gel Liner is my trusty ‘non-budge or smudge’ liner for long days of filming as it lasts and lasts! I’m also loving the gorgeous colours available in Chanel Waterproof Long Lasting Eyelinerand also my Loreal Superliner BlackBuster with its chunky nib for quick and easy kitten flicks!
Q: I have to work all day before my Christmas party, how to I transform myself for the evening in a short amount of time?
Alex: I’ve been there many times before and I find the easiest thing to do is go to work with a minimal base so you can apply a fresh base at the end of the day. A full face of foundation that’s been on all day can leave your skin feeling dry and looking dull, layering over the top will only cause caking. If you feel naked without your usual amount of foundation for work, try using a tinted moisturiser on the morning of the party with a little bronzer or blush on the cheeks, it will be worth it for your glamorous transformation later!
Also, in the morning before work, apply a pencil eyeliner and soften with a blending brush. You’ll be able to build up the liner later and with a dab of glitter, a fresh application of liquid liner and a generous coat of mascara after work you’ll have party eyes in seconds! A lip colour can dramatically transform a look so make sure you’ve chosen your perfect lipstick or gloss before the date of your party, also an excuse for a girl’s day out to try some out!
As a final touch, I would add a dusting of a Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick for a red carpet finish. Wash your hair before work and pack your straightener or curling iron so you can add a simple, sexy wave at the end of the day and you’re good to go! Cloud nine Micro Iron and Micro Wand are perfect to pop in your handbag!
Alex also recommends perking up your look with Undercover Glamour’s beauty and fashion accessories such as fashion tape, false eyelashes, clip in hair extensions as well as Undercover Glamour’s ultra sticky, stick on bras in A cup, B cup, C cup, D cup, E cup and F cup which are great for backless party dresses or if you want to give your bust a boost Undercover Glamour’s padded stick on bras and a range of breast enhancers, including chicken fillets.
